College Profile & History

Kalamazoo Valley Community College was established in 1966 by the overwhelming approval of voters in nine local school districts. It is a comprehensive, fully accredited, public, two-year college with enrollment of about 10,000 students. Kalamazoo Valley offers certificate programs in more than 50 areas of study and associate degrees in 60 others. In addition to associate degree and certificate programs in art and new media, business, education/human service/social science, English/humanities/liberal arts, health careers, industrial trades, public service, science and engineering, and sustainable food systems, the college also provides a quality experience for students preparing to transfer to four-year institutions following graduation.

Kalamazoo Valley Community College has established the only competency-based program, in the United States, certified by BZEE. The Wind Turbine Technician Academy provides a fast track to jobs that are in demand and pay high wages. Kalamazoo Valley Community College offers this course as a non-credit, full-time program allowing men and women the chance to be job ready in less than 6 months. Students attend Monday through Friday, 8 hours each day for 24 weeks. Training is held at Kalamazoo Valley Groves Campus.

The Wind Turbine Technician Academy is a competency based training program designed to assure students have the core technical skills essential to perform effectively and safely as an entry level wind turbine technician. The program combines lecture, demonstration, laboratory exercises, and field work to facilitate learning. Safe work practices are stressed and consistently practiced. Over 96% of graduates from this program receive gainful employment as a service technician in a variety of industries including wind energy.
