The work environment

Wind turbines can be dangerous workplaces. There are hazardous chemicals and dangerous equipment that must be used daily. Some responsibilities require technicians to work more than 100m off the ground. This means they must know how to safely do their jobs, and they must make critical decisions on their own. Some fast thinking may be involved to get some aspects of the job completed safely.

The pay
The average wind turbine service technician salary in the EU currently ranges from €40,260 for an entry level wind turbine service technician (1-3 years of experience) to €68,460 for a senior level wind turbine service technician (8+ years of experience). In the United States current salaries range from $46,420 to $77,810 per year. Technicians working offshore earn on average more than those working onshore. Paid overtime is also common for wind turbine technicians.

Job Outlook
Employment of wind turbine technicians is projected to grow by up to 65 percent by 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations. Many of these openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire. Many technicians will eventually be considered for team leader or management positions. Once promoted to team leader or a management position, the employee will oversee other technicians and make sure all aspects of a wind turbine are operating smoothly.
